The changing face of retail in The Hague

Following on from the closure of Maison de Bonneterie in August,as one closes another opens. H&M have acquired this building in The Hague along with the sister unit in Amsterdam and will start trading during 2015.

A short walk away into The Passage and you find the latest Apple Store in The Netherlands which has opened in the former Selexyz bookstore unit. Totally transformed, the new interior follows the Apple corporate style. While being a calm backdrop to the product, it now appears dated, this is not helped by the traditional building and the classic detailing. Maybe it is time for a change.

Leaving the Apple store and walking through the Passage, you are now greeted by the ‘new’passage, a covered mall linking through to the Grote Marktstraat. Housing 20 stores including the German retailer Kult, urban fashion store, the first to open in The Netherlands,
Dunglemann deli, Frozz, Starbucks and a host of mainstream fashion names. While the internal space is light and airy, with vertical planting and prominent shopfronts. The external elevation looks like a series of dot decorated boxes with glass cut outs. Interesting now, but will it look relevant in a few years. Less is more!.
